One of the leaders will stay at the hotel with students who arrive the day before departure. If you have reserved and paid for a hotel room, we will send you an email two weeks prior to departure with details about the hotel reservation and instructions on how to meet your leader.
June 26: Departure Day, Atlanta to Dominica
Group Meeting:
At 5:30 AM, meet your group leader and fellow students at the Delta Airlines check-in counter (outside of security) at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). This is the official start of your Putney summer!
Group Flight:
The group will fly on Delta Airlines flight #323 departing Atlanta (ATL) at 8:20 AM, arriving in San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) at 11:58 AM local time. The group continues on from San Juan on LIAT Airlines flight #563 departing at 2:50 PM and arriving in Antigua (ANU), at 4:10 PM local time. The group then continues on from Antigua (ANU) on LIAT Airlines flight #523 at 5:10 PM and arrives in Dominica (DOM) at 5:50 PM local time (9 hours, 30 minutes en route).
June 26 – July 10: Bense
Spend your first full day exploring Bense, getting to know your group, visiting pristine beaches, and participating in an in-depth orientation discussing life in Dominica, your project village, and group dynamics. Get to know the community through your service projects, afternoon activities, and individual projects. Interview a local centenarian about the history of the village, attend graduation at the primary school, or learn to cook a traditional Dominican meal. Actively engage in your experience and enjoy getting to know both your Putney and Dominican peers.
July 11: Morne Trois Pitons National Park
Stay at a rainforest mountain lodge on the edge of Morne Trois Pitons National Park. With knowledgeable local Dominican guides, trek into the mountains to the world’s second largest boiling lake. Cool off and relax after your hike in the stunningly beautiful waterfalls of Titou Gorge.
July 12 – July 16: Bense
Continue work on community service projects and begin to hone and complete your individual project.
July 17: Return Day, Dominica to Atlanta
Group Flight:
The group will fly on LIAT Airlines flight #362 departing Dominica (DOM) at 11:40 AM, arriving in San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) at 1:25 PM local time. The group continues on from San Juan (SJU) on Delta Airlines flight #1595 departing at 3:48 PM, returning to the International Arrivals Area of Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) at 7:49 PM local time (8 hours en route).
